Home Advisor - Another Manipulative and Deceptive Company

I was trying to find a reliable, honest home improvement referral site. I called Better Homes and Gardens.

The phone number is Home Advisor - not mentioned anywhere in the email I received from Better Homes and Gardens. I attempted to post a review 4/16/16 - a local contractor came out, gave me an estimate, came back went up 50.00 on the estimate. The worker punched *** through my wall while adding an electrical switch. The contractor knocked off 75.00 for the repair.

These are facts. It's dishonest to leave reviews sitting in "pending" indefinitely. It's dishonest to omit a review for no reason. I had another review that they approved after leaving the review "pending " for several months.

Some reviews only show the date H A publish the review, not when the review was submitted. It's dishonest and misleading to omit the date of the review.

Liars and Crooks!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

In my opinion Home Adviser, formally Service Magic is a terrible company to do business with. When I signed up I was told that if a lead was invalid for some reason, like the potential customer couldnt be contacted or the lead was for a different service then my company provided, I could simply indicate this on the Service Magic internet portal and I would not have to pay for this bogus lead.

LIES, LIES, LIES! It turned out that out of perhaps 20 leads that they charged me for there were only 2 legitimate leads. When I brought this to the attention of one of their customer relations people I was told that, basically, it didnt really matter if the leads were legit or not, I was expected to pay for them anyway. Really?

My conclusion is that this company is both incompetent in producing the quality leads that were promised me, as well as unscrupulous in their business dealings. My advice to all contractors STAY AWAY FROM SERVICE MAGIC FAR,RAR AWAY!

Hi Kim, We're sorry you feel this way, we are able to credit leads back for work you are not profiled for. That said, it appears the majority of the leads you received were given to you free of charge and therefore not something we are able to credit back as there wasn't a fee in the first place. We have cleared your remaining balance and cancelled your account, if there is any further assistance we can offer please reach out to emailus@homeadvisor.com. -HASupport

After being with this company for 8 months I can soundly say do what ever you can to avoid using them. Each lead you receive costs money, I understood that from day one.

But what I was told I would be charged for and the type of lead I would receive couldnt have been any further from the truth. My coverage area was to be 20 miles, Most of the leads I was given were further than that. I was to receive leads for Panel Upgrades only, nothing else. Over the 8 months I was with them I received about 50 leads, maybe 10 were panel upgrades.

After talking 4 times to them I received some credits, but those credits only go to future leads, not back on your credit card. Then you are stuck wanting to use your credit up only to get 80% bad leads again. When I asked for more credit it turned into a total of 2 hours on the phone and an email the next day denying the credits. I was denied credit for jobs that clearly werent panel upgrades ( stated by the job description the customer wrote ) and others that werent in my then custom made service area.

All in all over a 8 month period I am about $3000 behind with HA. Biggest scam ever. They get paid on your card as soon as a lead is generated.

And the same customer may contact 3 contractors for the same job. Stay as far away as possible

Hello,

We're sorry to hear this. The name of the task you are referencing is "electrical wiring or panel upgrades" and will also include some other wiring projects. That said, any leads that come in that don't fall under that category are absolutely eligible for credit. We're also always happy to help you narrow down your coverage area as any leads that come outside of that are eligible for credit as well. Additionally, lead charges fall into the weekly billing cycle and are not immediately charged when you receive them. We're happy to further address your concerns, please call Customer Care at 877-947-3639 or reach out to emailus@homeadvisor.com to speak with a rep.

Scam Alert! Watch out!

Don't get screwed by the thieves called Home Advisor = Home Robber. The reviews are scam, the pros verification process is a scam, the customer service and issues resolution procedures are scam. This is easily the worst company out there. As a consumer I had a disastrous experience and won't advise anyone to use them ever!

I have hired someone based on reviews and the experience was indescribable. Issue after issue, after issue. Involving useless Home Robber service did absolutely nothing except wasted my time adding to the aggravation. With everything said and done I will never user this services again.

In addition there are multiple law suits are currently hitting the legal system as a result of the business practices of these scammers.

Well, I hope someone will make them close their doors for good. They have no business being in business!

HomeAdvisor in not trustworthy

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Updated by user Jul 19, 2017

HomeAdvisor called several times. They sent an email saying they were going to post my review.

They have not posted my review. They are not trustworthy.

Original review Jun 17, 2017

I used the HomeAdvisor website to find a local contractor to build a garage. I entered into a contract with the contractor and gave them a $7000 deposit.

The contractor never built the garage and would not refund my deposit. After three years I still have not resolved this issue with the contractor. As for HomeAdvisor, I sent them my online review of this contractor just stating the facts with the same description above, and I received a reply stating they could not use my review and refused to respond to my contacts asking why they would not use my review.

All you have to realize is that these contractors pay HomeAdvisor to list their services and they apparently will not post negative reviews (maybe contractors pay extra to block negative reviews). Therefore I don't believe HomeAdvisor is trustworthy in representing consumer interests.

Rewards Program-A "Maybe" Chance for a $50 Check

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I hired 3 contractors through Home Advisor and all work was completed and reviewed by May 18, 2017. On that date, I gave a 5 star review of this last contractor which detailed the drywall work he completed.

In checking the rewards cite, it noted that the status of the last project was "under review". The definition of this stated that Home Advisor was confirming my review and it would take 2 to 5 days to complete and I would be notified if there was an issue. On May 31, 2017, I spent over 1 hour trying to contact the rewards department and could only get voice mail. 4 different customer service agents tried but could not get the department to answer their phones.

Finally, a customer service supervisor sent an email to Lisa in that department to call me. Lisa did call and said there were only 3 people in her department and they could not answer all the calls and preferred having customers leave a voice mail. As to last project being under review, she said that the web page was wrong and they did not have to complete their review in 2 to 5 days and that it was in the Terms and Conditions that they had 30 days. I asked her to review that with me to point out where in the terms and conditions it stated they had 30 days.

She did so and admitted it was not in there but she then asserted that there was no time limit on how long they could take to review my review. Really, so why should I expect that I will receive the $50.00 reward check anytime in the near future.

This is no way to run a reward program or any business. Very disappointed in Home Advisor.

HOMEADVISOR REWARD PROGRAM

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
HOMEADVISOR REWARD PROGRAM

I hired 3 pros from Homeadvisor but one doesn't show anywhere except in my Fav Pros which they say is no proof I hired them through HA yet I can prove I hired them. Because of their reward program, I hired 2 other pros to qualify for the $50 reward offered.

I've had nothing but runarounds from their c/s; sent 2 email about this which were never responded to and Ken in c/s promised to send me a copy of his email to the rewards program which he never did. Lisa called me from the rewards program and just got more *** from her. Now I don't know why they don't show me hiring the one pro which I hired before the others but they will not honor my word that I did and offer no other solution. She slipped in the notion that that the reward program only started 01-06-17 as if my hires were before that but you'll see in my attached photo all were after 02-20-2017.

I hear that the parent company that runs HA is buying out Angies List. Great now they'll have a monopoly and you'll never get anything from them in the way of customer service.

They just lost me as a customer unless I can find some service like weeding for $50 or thereabouts so I can finally get my due reward. But after that it's hasta la vista, baby BTW, I'm posting this on ripoffreport as well.

Please dont fall into this trap! Very upset.

A sales person called me 2 weeks ago and was very very pushy. Unfortunately I gave in and allowed her to set an account up for me.

Well....The few "leads" I have received turned out to be dead ends and on top of that my side business that I have with home advisor came to and abrupt end do to personal issues. I called Home Advisors and explained my situation and canceled my account. They informed me that they can not refund my almost $300 dollars that I gave them barley 2 weeks ago. So here I am minus $300 for absolutely nothing.

That $300 could go a long with personal things that have came up in the past week. I explained that to the person I spoke with and he said a refund would not happen.

Anything I have ever had to return in the past 30 years of my life always had at least a 30 day return policy. I have NEVER written a bad review on anything and I hate to be "that guy" but I am very upset about my whole experience with Home Advisors.

Someone whom our company never did any work for posted a poor review of our company

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Home Advisor posted a poor review on our Home Advisor page from someone whom we never did any work for. We explained it to Home Advisor's Customer Solutions Dept., and were told we would recieve an email about how to contest the review.

This was in February. We responded with the proper letter describing how we NEVER did any work for this individual and that the review was obviously for a company other than ours. We were told in the phone call about the bad review that it wouldnt be posted for 10 days while they contacted the individual. Being a large busy commercial contractor it was forgotten about, until our marketing dept.

brought it to my attention that it was on our Home Advisor ratings page...AND ITS NOW EARLY MAY! Imagine, all of the potential clients we have lost after they read that false review! But wait, it gets even better. I called Home Advisor about it at the beginning of the week, spoke with the first person, explained it to him and he transferred me to Customercare dept., but that call didnt transfer so he got back on the line and told me that customer care would call me back in the order the call was on the waiting list.

I never received a call. The following morning I called back and spoke to a girl, explained to her what was going on and she said she would transfer me, then got on the line and said it was busy but she would walk down the hall because she had a friend there that she would talk to. After about 10 minutes she got back on the line and said they would call me back. At that point I wanted her to get me a manager of some kind that was above or overseeing the Customersolutions dept.

She put me on hold again and when she came back she said the manager of the dept or depts name Molly or Mully would review the emails and...someone would get back to me!! Home Advisor, call American Construction back and fix this now!

We're so sorry to hear about your experience.
